Assignment #5

The Wizard of Oz has many allegorical elements. This means that most of the characters and places in the movie have a literal and a symbolic meaning. Dorothy is an example of just an everday  girl on a journey. The lion is supposed to be a fierce, strong character, but in the movie, he is cowardly and weak.  All the tin man wants is a heart. People who look like they have no heart and like they are made of tin, may just be longing for what they look like they don’t have. The straw man desperately wants a brain. His body may consist of barely anything, but he wants knowledge, because knowledge is more profound than anything. All of these examples clearly show you that looks are decieving and they don’t show the real desires of a person.

A Real Renaissance Woman

I believe that my aunt is a true example of a renaissance woman. She’s extremely intelligient, although she may not come off that way! She’s funny, VERY artistic, and excels greatly in anything she does. I truly think she’s a great example of a renaissance woman!

Ghosts!

Ghosts and the superstitions concerning them have been around for centuries. During the English Renaissance period there was an increased interest in ghosts. People believed that ghosts came around to seek revenge. The same superstition still exists today. Some people today believe that ghosts are prevalent for revenge and some believe they’re still here because they’re stuck what we call a ”middle life.” The middle life means that they’ve died, but they just can’t seem to get to the other side. Many families have legends, sayings, or superstitions concerning ghosts. My family does not. Some famous places that are haunted today are the Bell Witch Cave in Tennessee, the Moore Home/ Ax Murder House in Iowa, and the Winchester Mansion in Califoirnia. I believe people are so interested in ghosts because they don’t exactly know much about them. The lack of information is what keeps us all interested.

“I Need A Hero.”

In the short shrek video, I found that Shrek, Fiona, and Pus ‘n Boots were all heros. They were all defending their friendship, looking out for one another, and trying to keep each other safe and out of harm’s way. All heros in my point of view are loyal to what they believe in, they’re brave, always honest, and they have a big heart. The ancient character Beowulf demonstrates all the characteristics of being a true hero. Protecting all those people from Grendel is what makes him a hero. He’s brave for facing such a monster,  and he obviously has a heart, or he wouldn’t care about protecting and defending everyone.

Harry Potter is a TRUE hero!

I chose the video above, because Harry Potter is the ultimate hero. He is constantly saving the day and keeping everyone safe from Lord Voldemort! This particular video just shows a few of his many heroic moments.

This is my first time ever using a blog for a class assignment. In a way, I’m very much looking forward to it. It seems more “high-tech”, which is pretty exciting. I like the idea of having a blog to express myself in. When you feel like you have no one to talk to, and something is on your mind, blogging seems like a pretty good thing to do!

  • None
  • phsenglish12: The thing about these characters is that they not only deceived others, they were deceived about themselves as well until the end of the movie. Cool!
  • nbates8125: Good insight on the characters
  • nick3476: Hmm...very interesting
